When Steve Cohen's Political Pandering Goes Awry

Memphis TN –July 18, 2006 ......The game of racial politics is one with no winners, even though Cohen himself is playing into the "black enough" notion......He's said, only half-jokingly, that his liberal voting record makes him look like a black woman.......  Wendi Thomas, Commercial Appeal ( July 13, 2006 )

Tom Guleff, Republican candidate for U.S. Congress believes that race and gender should not be factors in this congressional election. The pandering from political candidates and preachers to elect someone from the African-American community to Harold Ford's seat has gone too far.

After giving it much thought and deliberation, it is appropriate that we take a position on this sensitive topic. “I want to go on record in recognizing fellow midtowner Steve Cohen's decision to become a "black woman,” says Tom. This has recently come to light in his acknowledgement of his voting record and his public pronouncements.

It's up to all of us to support Steve Cohen's transformation efforts. If you've seen Steve Cohen lately, you know this will be difficult. Steve will need the latest fashions from "Baby Phat" and a full line of "Lady Egypt " cosmetics. We need everybody on this one, there's a lot of work that needs to be done. It will take a village to make this happen (and a steady hand).

Most folks can see how silly the above paragraphs sound. Steve Cohen's pand erin g is disrespectful. Respect is about listening and communicating. Everyone wants to be heard, because (like al l of us) we think what we have to say is important. This is a leadership lesson learned from living and surviving in desert and jungle environments with others as an Army Ranger.

I am a new breed of Republican who will not shy away from the fray. Pandering will no longer carry the day. It solves no problems, it educates no one, and it creates no social wealth. There will be no safety in this realm for Steve Cohen.

Check out Tom Guleff’s website at www.tomguleff.com you’ll see why people are getting interested in politics again.
