The Battle for a Memphis Renaissance

Memphis , TN --  April 28, 2006 –Tom Guleff , candidate for the 9th Congressional District, calls for Renaissance-thinking in reshaping our communities and the city of Memphis . The c al l to become a shining city on the bluff resonates with al l its citizens.  "There is great potential in our city that needs to be unleashed.

The exodus of people from Memphis to neighboring communities must stop being encouraged by elected officials who see that as advantageous to their politic al base. We need to escape the "Dark Ages" of politic al thinking that traps so many in our city,” states Tom. This self-serving shortsightedness will leave our city with hundreds of problems that we can not address because of dwindling tax revenues. We are better than this. Future revitalization efforts will collapse, if we continue on this path.

We have wonderful people fighting daily to keep Memphis a flourishing community, only to be hampered by the effects of crime and poor performing schools. We have to support these brave souls and their efforts. We must al low our fellow citizens to rediscover the goodness and potential in Memphis .

Let’s stop the flow of talent and innovation that is being sent to other counties. I propose that we concentrate on three vital steps to help reverse this insidious trend of thinking. One, find out why people are leaving our great city and fix it. Two, protect al l neighborhoods the same, let no community experience less or more crime in any one statistic. And last, lets plan a rebirth of classic al learning and knowledge in our institutions by giving the schools back to the community.

A Renaissance is coming; let’s get started. Contact electtomguleff@aol.com or go to the website www.tomguleff.com  Every e-mail will be answered.
