Why We Need a US Army Airborne Ranger in Congress

Memphis , TN – July 5, 2006 – “The soldier above al l other people prays for peace, for he must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war,” said Gener al Douglas MacArthur in 1962.  His words, even today, echo the feelings of soldiers, sailors, and airmen who have worn the uniform.  In a world where there are more and more profession al politicians, the ranks of those in Washington with military service are thinning. Those who send soldiers to battle have little person al tie to the military. Gone are the days of the Great Generation of World War II veterans that occupied seats in Congress. We are losing military experience in Congress as every year passes. Today, service is oddly measured in committee and fundraising chairmanships.

In 2006, the military seems disconnected from those who appropriate funds and make legislation. A photo opportunity at a military base is nice for the newspaper, but it does little for understanding the military way of life. Soldiers cannot be forgotten; no matter what little corner of the globe they are stationed. What makes our nation the most formidable in the world is the strength of our country's sons and daughters who defend it.

There is no greater responsibility than caring for soldiers. Mothers and fathers have entrusted the officers and non-commissioned officers of the armed forces with their most prized possessions. The American soldier reflects our country; its ide al s, v al ues and freedom. They deserve leaders that support them. There's a speci al kinship among those that have served in uniform, a brotherhood that understands sacrifice and trust.

Memphis has al ways had a speci al connection with its veterans. From company CEOs, pilots, engineers, and dock workers you'll find the patriots who once served honorably living here in our community. These are difficult times in America .  These are the times we c al l on those who have served our country to once again lead us. We Need a US Army Airborne Ranger in Congress.
