Tom Guleff (R) takes to the Border

Olive Branch, MS -- June 7, 2006 --Tom Guleff (R), Republican candidate for the 9th congression al seat, has decided to travel to the border and understand first hand what's going on. "Today, we al so have a migration problem in our district,” says Tom.  Speaking in a conference c al l to his staff from Desoto County , Mississippi , Guleff said he traveled to the Tennessee-Mississippi border to educate himself on the issue by t al king to those who are de al ing with the problem "on the fences."

Guleff said he was standing about 10 feet from the border as he spoke, and could see Olive Branch "spotters" riding four-wheelers on the other side. The spotters, he said, were looking for weaknesses in Memphis and Shelby County leadership that are forcing families to cross.

A series of multi-colored flags indicated the location of a subdivision for Memphians attempting to move. He said he had seen a moving van pass by on the other side of the border, and numerous and "blatant" inducements to lure families to Desoto County .

"We have to do something yesterday on this," Guleff said. "We can start by honestly addressing issues involving crime, education, and jobs here in Memphis .” Families are getting so desperate that they are even moving to Tate and Marshall County, MS. That shows a level of desperation never seen before in a bid to flee Shelby County .

Thousands of Memphians have passed through to Desoto County in the last ten years, leaving behind huge amounts of debt and a lost tax base for Shelby County . Guleff said the real problem with migration is not along the border, it is in Washington , D.C. where there has been "a lack of will to focus on a Memphis Agenda.”

“Congress has known about the immigration issue for several decades, and now these politicians are falling over each other to make campaign commercials and send out press releases from our borders," says Tom. "We'll see if anything gets done before the House and Senate end their session.”

Candidate Guleff has been asked if he was "filming a commercial" at the border, as some GOP candidates have recently done. Tom claims, “It’s too dangerous down there. We can wait till all the politicians leave; it will be safer then.   Memphis is our priority, so you won't see me making that Mexico border trip anytime soon.”

Tom Guleff has been running hard and fast against the status quo.  For more information, go to the website www.tomguleff.com .
