Tom
has strong roots in the 9th Congressional
District of Tennessee.
As a child, he moved with his military family
across the country and settled in
Memphis,
Tennessee
(Whitehaven). In the early years, he attended
Ford
Road
Elementary school
and Hillcrest
Junior High School. Along with playing baseball, he was active in the Boy
Scouts of America Troop 248 and achieved the rank of
Life Scout. Leadership assignments came early with
position of senior patrol leader (top scout in troop)
and captain of his baseball team. It was during this
time, where he learned the importance of citizenship in
the community and the nation.
He graduated from Memphis Prep in 1982, gaining
honors in wrestling and academics. His first taste of
world politics occurred with a stint in a
University
of
Memphis Model United Nations, where Tom’s team won “Best Resolution”.
He received both the congressional and
presidential appointment to the
United States Military
Academy
at West Point
, something unheard of at the time. Tom is a product of
the Memphis School Systems both public and private.
After thriving in a vigorous environment, Tom
graduated from the
United
State
Military
Academy
at
West Point
in 1986 with a B.S. in International Affairs and began
his Army career as 2nd Lieutenant.
After graduating from the Army’s elite
Ranger

Airborne Division. With the 1/327th Infantry
Regiment, Tom served as Infantry Platoon Leader,
Specialty Platoon Leader (Mortars), S-3 Battalion
Operations Officer (Air), Executive Officer Headquarters
Company, and the Battalion Adjutant.
In the fall of 1990, he would be deployed with
his unit in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
There his unit would be tested. He was awarded the
Bronze Star for his actions within the 750-man battalion
in
Saudi Arabia
and
Republic
of
Iraq
and promoted to the rank of Captain. As a testament to
his professional ethics, his commanding officer wrote
that “His integrity is never diminished by pressure to
get the task accomplished.”
Fulfilling
his military duty, Tom began his civilian working
career as Production Supervisor for Cargill, Inc. and
was selected within the first year to be Plant Manager.
He was promoted to manage plants in
North Carolina
and
Memphis
,
Tennessee. By
returning to his roots in 1994, Tom continued his long
love affair with the place that gave him his start.
He spent six years as District Operations Manager
for the Cargill Memphis plant where he recorded 5 years
of record earnings under his guidance.
Tom left Cargill to create his own company called,
Sports Learning Company. This company produces sports
learning videos for young children. Today, Tom works
with Lucite International as Training Production Manager
where he focuses on the professional development of its
employees.
