"He received both the congressional and
presidential appointment to the
United States
Military
Academy
at
West Point
, something unheard of at the time. Tom is a product of
the Memphis School Systems both public and private.
After thriving in a vigorous environment, Tom
graduated from the
United
States
Military
Academy
at
West Point
in 1986 with a B.S. in International Affairs and began
his Army career as 2nd Lieutenant.
After graduating from the Army’s elite
Ranger
School
he was assigned to the prestigious 101st
Airborne Division. With the 1/327th Infantry
Regiment, Tom served as Infantry Platoon Leader,
Specialty Platoon Leader (Mortars), S-3 Battalion
Operations Officer (Air), Executive Officer Headquarters
Company, and the Battalion Adjutant.
In the fall of 1990, he would be deployed with
his unit in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
There his unit would be tested. He was awarded the
Bronze Star for his actions within the 750-man battalion
in
Saudi Arabia
and
Republic
of
Iraq
and promoted to the rank of Captain. As a testament to
his professional ethics, his commanding officer wrote
that “His integrity is never diminished by pressure to
get the task accomplished.”
